Types of Yoga

Updated: Nov 18, 2021

Yoga is not only an incredible form of exercise; it helps improve flexibility, lowers stress levels, helps you sleep better at night, and helps define your muscles. There are many different types of yoga that can benefit you in different ways.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (Vinyasa)

Ashtanga Vinyasa is one of the most well-known forms of yoga in the Western world. Its name comes from the eight limbs of yoga, which serve as its foundation. Ashtanga means "to follow a set sequence" or "fixed order." Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is known for its continuous flow of movement that keeps you moving from one posture to the next. This form of yoga is often referred to as power yoga because it involves flowing movements. It's also popularly referred to as "hot yoga" because it relies on poses being done in close proximity to each other, meaning it can get very hot in the room if you're not properly hydrated.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga has gained popularity in recent years, with many studios offering classes that combine yin with other types of yoga. Yin, which is considered a meditative type of yoga that uses long-held poses, may be done either seated or lying down. The purpose of these slow-paced but deep stretches is to encourage flexibility and improve circulation by holding postures for three to five minutes.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is the most popular form of yoga. Hatha means "sun" and "moon." Sun refers to pingala nadi and moon refers to ida nadi. These two energy channels start from the base of spine and run up to the top of spine. The left channel is called ida and right channel is called pingala. It is believed that through practice of asanas, these energy channels awaken and unite at sahasrara chakra (situated at the crown of head) and one achieves higher states of consciousness. It emphasizes physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation.

Power Yoga

Power yoga incorporates athletic movements into traditional postures. It's less meditative than other forms of the practice, but the workout can be even more intense.

There are so many varieties of yoga that sometimes it can be hard to know which one is right for you. Yoga has the potential to enhance your health and wellbeing, so choosing the right type for you is an important decision. The best way to decide which will be the best fit for your lifestyle and capabilities is to familiarize yourself with all of your options and decide which one appears most appealing and attainable.
